The Ravel Manifesto
The textile industry touches almost every moment of modern life.
Just think, clothes are worn by nearly every person, nearly all the time, everywhere on earth.
Whether as a source of comfort and protection or a show of self expression and identity,
The role they play in our daily lives is undeniable.
And that’s only part of the picture.
We live in a material world.
From apparel to upholstery, home decor to hospital sheets,
It’s a sector worth trillions, serving a market of billions and providing employment for hundreds of millions.
Across every community, country and culture.
In fields, in factories, from shipping ports to shopping malls. But beyond its influence on the lives and livelihoods of people across the globe.
It also has an impact on our environment.
Each thread of every fabric comes at a price.
For the people who make it, the process of manufacturing it and the planet as a whole.
It’s a linear system that leads straight to the landfill.
Especially when it comes to our clothing.
Between fast fashion and throw away culture,
We’re using more resources to create more clothes that are worn less before being thrown away.
Polluting our oceans, poisoning our wildlife and putting pressure on communities and ecosystems the world over.
Put simply, the cost has become too high.
It’s time to do things differently; to spark a material revolution.
By challenging our mindsets, changing our consumption and collaborating creatively to radically rethink the way we design, produce, distribute and dispose of textiles and apparel.
No single individual, organization or brand can solve this problem alone.
To get from where we are to where we could be, we need infrastructure to support the transition.
That’s why we started Ravel.
Our purpose is to create the technology and infrastructure for circular textiles and enable the endless flow of fibre, free from waste.
By creating micro-recycling factories that can be deployed locally on a global scale.
We’re rethinking the possibilities for textile production while reinvigorating the potential for distributed local economies to thrive.
Our novel and innovative process transforms textile trash into timeless treasure, Converting end-of-life blended fiber into new, high quality materials, ready to be reborn,
Changing the shape of the industry, from a linear system to an infinite loop, one shipping container-sized box at a time.
In a way that’s affordable, accessible and efficient.
Which means, we can meet our needs without messing up the planet. So whether you’re a fashionista in search of sustainable statements or a household brand hoping to lead the change.
You can join the effort to advance circularity.
We believe that if we can embrace a new economy for textiles, it will pave the way towards a genuine evolution of the global economy as a whole.
One that reflects a harmonious relationship between everything and everyone on earth.
That’s why we’ve set ourselves an ambitious first mission to accomplish over the coming years.
We will prove our concept by deploying boxes to divert tens of thousands of kgs of textiles a day away from landfills and towards reuse.
But we’re not stopping there.
Because it isn’t a simple fix or a minor shift.
It’s a total transformation.
And it’s going to take sustained effort to become truly sustainable. This is just the first step towards a world in which the way that we consume supports people and the planet to prosper in harmony.
And you’re part of that vision too.
We all are.
